Murray trained for the priesthood at St Michael's House, Crafers, South Australia, and the Australian College of TheologyCrockford's Clerical Directory, 1973-74, 85th Edition, p 683. and was ordained in 1969. His first post was at St Boniface's Cathedral, Bunbury. He then served at Lake Grace, Jerramungup and Mount Barker.Crockford's Clerical Directory 1980-82 p 721 London: Oxford University Press, 1983 {{ISBN|0-19-200010-1}} He was Bishop of the Southern Region of the Anglican Diocese of Perth from 1991 until 2006.
