Background
Oubel was born and raised in Avilés in Asturias.{{cite news |last1=Martínez |first1=Marián |title=El avilesino David Oubel, primer español condenado a cadena perpetua |trans-title=Avilés-born David Oubel, first Spaniard sentenced to life imprisonment|url=https://www.lne.es/asturias/2017/07/06/avilesino-david-oubel-primer-espanol-19272707.html |access-date=31 December 2020 |work=La Nueva España |date=6 July 2017 |language=Spanish}} Oubel confessed to his crimes in court, but did not explain a motive, and denied that he had a mental illness. The prosecutor Alejandro Pazos believed that Oubel was not mentally ill, but had elements of narcissistic and psychopathic personalities. Oubel received the maximum penalty due to the aggravating factors of malice aforethought – he sedated his victims – the age of his victims and his parental responsibility to them. Oubel was also banned from contacting their mother for 30 years, and made to pay her €300,000 in compensation.
Arrest and aftermath
From his arrest, Oubel was detained in the Villahierro prison near León and was only held in Galicia during his trial. For reasons of security he remains in Villahierro instead of serving his sentence in Galicia or his native Asturias.{{cite news |last1=López Penide |first1=Alfredo |title=El parricida avilesino no cumplirá la prisión permanente en Villabona|trans-title=The filicide from Avilés will not serve his life sentence in Villabona |url=https://www.lavozdeasturias.es/noticia/asturias/2017/07/11/parricida-avilesino-cumplira-prision-permanente-villabona/00031499794406262543765.htm |access-date=31 December 2020 |work=La Voz de Asturias |date=12 July 2017 |language=Spanish}} Jose Enrique Abuín Gey, aka "El Chicle", another Galician serving a life sentence for the murder of Diana Quer, is also incarcerated there.{{cite news |last1=Romero |first1=Javier |title=La vida en prisión de dos asesinos|trans-title=The prison life of two murderers |url=https://www.lavozdeasturias.es/noticia/asturias/2019/01/02/vida-prision-dos-asesinos/0003_201901G2P6991.htm |access-date=31 December 2020 |work=La Voz de Asturias |date=4 January 2019 |language=Spanish}} Prison staff have described Oubel as an isolated man who does not speak to staff or inmates.

In 2022, the mother of the girls criticised a television company for approaching her for a docuseries about the murders. By June 2023, Oubel had only paid €258 of the €300,000 compensation to the mother, compared to her legal expenses of €20,000. The mother, who had to move house and was unable to work due to grief, said that the state should pay compensation to families of murder victims, as it is in the case of terrorism.{{cite news |last1=Hermida |first1=María |title=El padre que asesinó a sus hijas en Moraña, condenado a pagar 300.000 euros a la madre, abona finalmente 258|trans-title=The father who murdered his daughters in Moraña, sentenced to pay 300,000 euros to their mother, finally sends 258|url=https://www.lavozdegalicia.es/noticia/pontevedra/morana/2023/06/08/padre-asesino-hijas-morana-condenado-pagar-300000-euros-madre-abona-finalmente-258/00031686221432978761675.htm |access-date=22 March 2025 |work=La Voz de Galicia |date=9 June 2023 |language=Spanish}}
