Day–evening–night noise level

The day–evening–night noise level or L{{sub|den}} is a 2002 European standard to express noise level over an entire day. It imposes a penalty on sound levels during evening and night{{cite book|author=Malcolm J. Crocker|title=Handbook of Noise and Vibration Control|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=46NvrvpHIxEC&pg=PA15|date=5 October 2007|publisher=John Wiley & Sons|isbn=978-0-471-39599-7|page=15}} and it is primarily used for noise assessments of airports, busy main roads, main railway lines and in cities over 100,000 residents.{{cite web|url=https://www.umweltbundesamt.de/daten/umwelt-gesundheit/gesundheitsrisiken-durch-umgebungslaerm|trans-title=Health risks from environmental noise|date=2 June 2020|title=Gesundheitsrisiken durch Umgebungslärm|publisher=Umweltbundesamt}}{{cite book|author=Daniel R. Definition

L{{sub|den}} is calculated as:{{cite act|url=http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/PDF/?uri=CELEX:32002L0049&from=EN|title=Directive 2002/49/EC|date=25 June 2002}}

L_{\mathrm{den}} = 10 \cdot \log_{10} \left(\frac{1}{24} \left(12\cdot 10 ^ \frac{L_{\mathrm{day}}}{10} + 4\cdot 10 ^\frac{L_{\mathrm{evening}} + 5}{10} + 8\cdot 10 ^\frac{L_{\mathrm{night}} + 10}{10}\right)\right)

Where the long-term average noise levels are defined as:

!Part of the day

hourspenalty (dB)
day07:00 - 19:000
evening19:00 - 23:005
night23:00 - 07:0010

The exact hours of the three periods may be chosen differently by individual EU member states.

The formula for L{{sub|den}} can be considered a weighted average of the yearly individual noise level during day, evening and night.
