History
{{expand section|date=April 2020}}
In 2001 the North Winneshiek Community School District ended its high school program. That year it entered into an agreement with Decorah CSD to allow students from its boundary to attend Decorah High School.{{cite web|url=http://www.n-winn.k12.ia.us/maps.html |title=North Winneshiek Community School History |publisher=North Winneshiek Community School District |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151010001029/http://www.n-winn.k12.ia.us/maps.html |accessdate=December 19, 2016|archive-date=2015-10-10 }}
In the 2012-2013 school year the district had 1,419 students.
In 2016, the North Winneshiek district agreed to consolidate with the Decorah CSD.{{cite web |url=http://www.kwwl.com/story/31739557/2016/04/Friday/north-winneshiek-school-consolidating-with-decorah |title=North Winneshiek School consolidating with Decorah |author=Shirley Descorbeth |publisher=KWWL-TV |date=April 15, 2016 |accessdate=December 19, 2016 }}{{Dead link|date=October 2022 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} Reasons for the decision to consolidate were rising costs and declining enrollment. As a part of the consolidation process, North Winneshiek 7th and 8th grade students began to attend Decorah Middle School at the beginning of the 2017–2018 school year, before fully consolidating in the 2019–2020 school year.{{cite web |url=http://www.decorahnews.com/archived-stories/2016/04/13388.html |title=North Winneshiek School will Consolidate with Decorah at the end of the 2018–2019 School Year |publisher=Decorahnews.com |date=April 14, 2016 |accessdate=December 19, 2016 }}{{Dead link|date=October 2022 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}
In 2018 voters in the districts agreed to make the consolidation final, with Decorah voters saying yes on a 621-104 basis and North Winnishiek voters saying yes on a 224-32 basis. Andrew Wind of the WCF Courier described the result as "overwhelming".{{cite web|author=Wind, Andrew|url=https://wcfcourier.com/news/local/education/decorah-north-winn-school-consolidation-vote-overwhelming-approved/article_f767daed-2b26-5257-8529-d03b34344d94.html|title=Decorah-North Winn school consolidation vote overwhelming approved|work=WCF Courier|date=2018-02-07|accessdate=2020-04-06}} Effective July 1, 2018 the North Winneshiek district consolidated into the Decorah district.{{cite web|url=https://educateiowa.gov/sites/files/ed/documents/2019-2020EducationalDirectory.pdf|title=Iowa Educational Directory 2019-2020 School Year|publisher=Iowa Department of Education|accessdate=2020-04-05|page=175|archive-date=2020-04-05|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200405082723/https://educateiowa.gov/sites/files/ed/documents/2019-2020EducationalDirectory.pdf|url-status=dead}} (PDF p. 177/186) - From section "REORGANIZATION & DISSOLUTION ACTIONS SINCE 1965-66" The pre-merger Decorah CSD had almost {{convert|175|sqmi|sqkm}} of area while North Winneshiek had about {{convert|135|sqmi|sqkm}} of area.
In 2018 the combined interim board of Decorah CSD and North Winneshiek CSD approved an agreement with Mabel-Canton Public Schools in Minnesota, effective for five years, to allow students in the former North Winneshiek district boundary to attend Mabel-Canton if they choose.{{cite web|url=https://decorahnewspapers.com/Content/Home/Home/Article/Interim-Board-approves-reciprocity-agreement-with-Mabel-Canton-for-five-years/-2/-2/46477|title=Interim Board approves reciprocity agreement with Mabel-Canton for five years|work=Decorah Newspapers|date=2018-10-22|accessdate=2020-04-06}} The agreement applies to any post-merger Decorah CSD resident who is geographically closer to Mabel, Minnesota, the location of the Mabel-Canton school, than to Decorah, where all Decorah CSD campuses are located.{{cite news|url=https://www.bluffcountrynews.com/content/mabel-canton-decorah-sign-enrollment-agreement-students-border|title=Mabel-Canton, Decorah sign enrollment agreement for students on the border|work=Bluff Country Newspaper Group|date=2019-02-08|accessdate=2020-04-06|archive-date=February 9, 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190209004036/https://www.bluffcountrynews.com/content/mabel-canton-decorah-sign-enrollment-agreement-students-border|url-status=dead}}
