History

Dectris was founded in 2006 as a spin-off company by Christian Brönnimann, a researcher at the Paul Scherrer Institute, and three colleagues, Eric F. Eikenberry, Markus Näf, and Petr Salficky.{{Cite web |date=2010-06-04|time=CEST00:00:00 |title=DECTRIS Ltd wins Swiss Economic Award 2010 |url=https://www.myscience.ch/en/news/wire/dectris_ltd_wins_swiss_economic_award_2010-2010-psi |access-date=2023-03-30 |website=www.myscience.ch |language=en}} In 2007, the company sold its first detector unit in the PILATUS series. In 2008 the MYTHEN detector was introduced followed by the EIGER in 2015.{{cite web |url=https://www.dectris.com/company/milestones/ |title=DECTRIS Milestones |author= |date= |website=Dectris |access-date=2022-03-01 |quote=}} In January 2022, Christian Brönnimann, who had been CEO since 2006, stepped down and Matthias Schneebeli (CTO since 2017) became the new CEO.{{cite web |url=https://www.aargauerzeitung.ch/aargau/wechsel-christian-broennimann-gibt-das-amt-als-ceo-bei-dectris-ab-ld.2161266 |title=Christian Brönnimann gibt das Amt als CEO bei Dectris ab |author= |date=2021-07-07 |website= Aargauer Zeitung |access-date=2022-03-01 |quote= |language=German}}{{cite web |url=https://www.dectris.com/company/news/newsroom/news/new-dectris-ceo-our-employees-knowledge-and-abilities-are-our-greatest-asset/ |title=New DECTRIS CEO: "Our employees' knowledge and abilities are our greatest asset" |author= |date=2021-07-06 |website=Dectris |access-date=2022-03-01 |quote=}}

Products

Dectris mainly develops and produces hybrid photon counting X-ray detectors. Three different product lines have been launched which all take their names from Swiss mountains, Pilatus, Mythen, and Eiger. All detectors use direct detection, meaning that X-ray photons are directly converted to electron-hole pairs instead of using visible light as an intermediary. This improves efficiency significantly and enables much higher count rates.{{Cite web |date=2018-11-06 |title=An Introduction to the X-Ray Applications of the EIGER2 R 500K X-Ray Detector |url=https://www.azom.com/article.aspx?ArticleID=17087 |access-date=2023-03-30 |website=AZoM.com |language=en}} Nearly two thirds of all structures in the Protein Data Bank have been solved using dectris detectors, legacy CCD detectors making up most of the rest.{{Cite web |title=Application Note Macromolecular Crystallography |url=https://www.dectris.com/en/landing-pages/application-note-mx |access-date=2023-10-17 |website=dectris.com |language=en}}

In recent years Dectris has developed and started producing electron detectors.{{r|milestones}}
