The deep transverse metacarpal ligament (also called the deep transverse palmar ligament) connects the palmar surfaces{{Citation needed|date=August 2023}} of metacarpophalangeal joints of all the fingers of the hand except the thumb.{{Cite book |last=Sinnatamby |first=Chummy S. |title=Last's Anatomy |vauthors= |publisher= |year=2011 |isbn=978-0-7295-3752-0 |edition=12th |pages=91}}
Structure
The deep transverse metacarpal ligament is a narrow fibrous band. It blends with the palmar metacarpophalangeal ligaments.
Its palmar surface is concave where the flexor tendons pass over it. {{Clarify|reason=Unclear what this means in this context (posteriorly/dorsally?)|date=August 2023|text=Behind}} it, the tendons of the interosseous muscles of the hand pass to their insertions.{{Citation needed|date=August 2023}}
Clinical significance
Rarely, the deep transverse metacarpal ligament may rupture.{{Cite journal|last1=Wheatley|first1=Michael J.|last2=Layman|first2=Charles|last3=Ben Burke|first3=J.|date=May 1998|title=Closed rupture of the deep transverse metacarpal ligament: Diagnosis and management|url=https://doi.org/10.1016/S0363-5023(05)80472-1|journal=The Journal of Hand Surgery|volume=23|issue=3|pages=524–528|doi=10.1016/s0363-5023(05)80472-1|pmid=9620195|issn=0363-5023|url-access=subscription}}
