Launched by Ermete Realacci and Fabrizio Vigni, the faction is composed by both former members of Democracy is Freedom – The Daisy (Realacci, Roberto Della Seta, Francesco Ferrante, etc.) and the Democrats of the Left (Vigni, Sergio Gentili, Gianni Mattioli, Edo Ronchi, Massimo Scalia, etc.).{{Cite web |url=http://ecodem.ulivo.it/gli-ecologisti-per-il-pd-nella-fase-costituente |access-date=2007-11-04 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071015195721/http://ecodem.ulivo.it/gli-ecologisti-per-il-pd-nella-fase-costituente |archive-date=2007-10-15 |url-status=dead |title=APPELLO DEGLI AMBIENTALISTI PER IL PARTITO DEMOCRATICO — Portale degli Ambientalisti per il Partito Democratico }} Most of these people were once members of the Federation of the Greens who left it between 1999 and 2004, after Luigi Manconi (who also joined the Democrats) left the party's leadership and the Greens experienced a far-left political transformation under Grazia Francescato and Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio.

The EcoDem fought the election for the Constituent Assembly of the Democratic Party on 14 October 2007 within the Environment, Innovation, Labour list, led by Realacci along with Giovanna Melandri and Luigi Nicolais.{{Cite web|url=http://www.lanuovastagione.it/conveltroni/|title=Lanuovastagione.it - Fonte di notizie e informazioni a 360 gradi}} The list scored 8.1% at the election[http://www.partitodemocratico.it/adon/files/totalegraf.pdf http://www.partitodemocratico.it/adon/files/totalegraf.pdf] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110716215824/http://www.partitodemocratico.it/adon/files/totalegraf.pdf |date=2011-07-16 }} and the EcoDem elected more than 100 delegates to the Assembly.{{Cite web |url=http://www.partitodemocratico.it/cgi-bin/adon.cgi?act=doc&doc=102766&sid=14 |access-date=2007-11-04 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071016163232/http://partitodemocratico.it/cgi-bin/adon.cgi?act=doc&doc=102766&sid=14 |archive-date=2007-10-16 |url-status=dead |title=Ulivo.it - verso il Partito Democratico }} Following this promising result, Realacci and Della Seta were appointed by PD leader Walter Veltroni heads of Communication and Environment departments, respectively.{{Cite web |url=http://partitodemocratico.it/cgi-bin/adon.cgi?act=doc&doc=103467 |title=Documento senza titolo |access-date=2008-01-28 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071228053826/http://www.partitodemocratico.it/cgi-bin/adon.cgi?act=doc&doc=103467 |archive-date=2007-12-28 |url-status=dead }}
