History

The journal was established in 1964. The publication has become more frequent in recent years:{{cite web |url=https://link.springer.com/journal/volumesAndIssues/13524 |work=Demography |title=All Volumes & Issues |publisher=Springer Science+Business Media |access-date=November 28, 2013}}

  • 1964–1965: Published once a year
  • 1966–1968: Published twice a year
  • 1969–2012: Published four times a year (with the exception of 2010, where there were five issues, one of which was a special supplement)
  • 2013–present: Published six times a year

Publication model

Older issues of the journal are available via JSTOR{{cite web |url=https://www.jstor.org/journal/demography |title=Demography |access-date=November 27, 2013}} and Project MUSE.{{cite web|url=http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/dem/ |title=Demography|publisher=Project MUSE |access-date=November 28, 2013}}

While published by Springer, Demography was a hybrid open access journal, charging subscription fees for access while offering authors the option of making their work available open access by paying an article processing charge.{{cite web |url=https://www.springer.com/social+sciences/population+studies/journal/13524 |title=Demography - include option for open access publication |publisher=Springer Science+Business Media |access-date=November 28, 2013}}{{cite web|url=https://www.springer.com/gp/open-access/springer-open-choice|title=Open Choice: Your research. Your choice.|website=springer.com|access-date=2017-01-27}}

The journal was fully converted to diamond open access in 2021 when Duke University Press became its publisher. It relies on a community partnership model, in which libraries, research centers, academic departments, and other entities voluntarily contribute funds to cover publication costs. Demography no longer assesses article processing charges.{{Cite web |title=Demography: An Open-Access Journal |url=https://www.dukeupress.edu/About/OPEN-ACCESS/Demography-Open-Access-Funding|access-date=2022-06-15 |website=Duke University Press}}
