Dermocystidium is a genus of cyst-forming, eukaryotic fish parasites,{{cite journal |vauthors=Feist SW, Longshaw M, Hurrell RH, Mander B |title=Observations of Dermocystidium sp. infections in bullheads, Cottus gobio L., from a river in southern England |journal=J. Taxonomic history

The genus Dermocystidium was described in 1907. It was previously thought to be a genus of fungal parasites, related to the Thraustochytrida and Labyrinthulida (both those groups are now considered to be stramenopiles rather than fungi). Other biologists considered it to be a sporozoan protist.

It was subsequently identified as one of a group of fish parasites (the "DRIP clade") of previously uncertain affiliation, which were later identified as nonanimal, nonfungal opisthokonts,{{cite journal |vauthors=Ragan MA, Goggin CL, Cawthorn RJ |title=A novel clade of protistan parasites near the animal-fungal divergence |journal=Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. |volume=93 |issue=21 |pages=11907–12 |date=October 1996 |pmid=8876236 |pmc=38157 |doi= 10.1073/pnas.93.21.11907|bibcode=1996PNAS...9311907R |display-authors=etal|doi-access=free }} and renamed as Ichthyosporea, and after expansion as Mesomycetozoa. Parasites of crustacea (Dermocystidium daphniae) and molluscs (Dermocystidium marinum) placed in this genus have been found to be likely a bacterium and an alveolate, respectively: Sayre, Gherna and Wergin (1983) concluded that Dermocystidium daphniae was likely identical to Pasteuria ramosa Metchnikoff, 1888,{{cite journal|last1=Sayre|first1=R.M.|last2=Gherna|first2=R.L.|last3=Wergin|first3=W.P.|title=Morphological and Taxonomic Reevaluation of Pasteuria ramosa Metchnikoff 1888 and "Bacillus penetrans" Mankau 1975|journal=International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology|volume=33|issue=3|doi=10.1099/00207713-33-3-636|year=1983|pages=636–649|doi-access=free}} while D. marinum has been reclassified as Perkinsus marinus.{{cite journal|last=Levine|first=Norman D.|journal=The Journal of Parasitology|volume=64|issue=3|doi=10.2307/3279807|jstor=3279807|page=549|year=1978|title=Perkinsus gen. n. and Other New Taxa in the Protozoan Phylum Apicomplexa}}
