Derris is genus of leguminous plants. It contains 65 species, which range from eastern Africa to the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, New Guinea, northern Australia, and the southwest Pacific islands. The roots of D. elliptica contain rotenone, a strong insecticide{{cite journal|last=Fryer|first=J.C.F|title=A Quantitative Study Of The Insecticidal Properties Of Derris Elliptica (Tuba Root)|journal=Annals of Applied Biology|date=February 1923|volume=10|issue=1|pages=18–34|doi=10.1111/j.1744-7348.1923.tb05651.x|publisher=Association of Applied Biologists|location=Warwick, England|display-authors=etal}} and fish poison.

Despite the secondary compounds found in Derris, they serve as food plants for many Lepidopteran larvae {{Cite web|url=http://florawww.eeb.uconn.edu/198500711.html|title=Derris elliptica {Fabaceae}|last=Morse|first=Clinton|website=florawww.eeb.uconn.edu|access-date=2016-08-21}} including Batrachedra spp.
