Species formerly considered members of the genera Probolodus and Myxiops were considered to be members of Deuterodon by modern researchers, following a thorough phyletic review of several characid genera in 2020,{{Cite journal |last1=Terán |first1=Guillermo E |last2=Benitez |first2=Mauricio F |last3=Mirande |first3=J Marcos |date=2020-04-11 |title=Opening the Trojan horse: phylogeny of Astyanax, two new genera and resurrection of Psalidodon (Teleostei: Characidae) |url=https://academic.oup.com/zoolinnean/advance-article/doi/10.1093/zoolinnean/zlaa019/5819054 |journal=Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society |language=en |doi=10.1093/zoolinnean/zlaa019 |issn=0024-4082|url-access=subscription }} though Myxiops was revalidated later.
