Research
Ullman is known for her research that revolves around an insect called a thrip and the orthotospoviruses that thrips can transmit to crop plants. An example of a virus she has worked with is the Tomato spotted wilt orthotospovirus (TSWV) which is transmitted by western flower thrips.{{Cite web |last=Terry |first=George M. |date=2020-02-21 |title=Diane Ullman {{!}} Entomology and Nematology |url=https://entomology.ucdavis.edu/people/diane-ullman |access-date=2024-05-16 |website=entomology.ucdavis.edu |language=en}} She has also examined insect pathogens and how plants in the nightshade are affected like potatoes and tomatoes.{{Cite journal |last1=Rossi |first1=Magdalena |last2=Goggin |first2=Fiona L. |last3=Milligan |first3=Stephen B. |last4=Kaloshian |first4=Isgouhi |last5=Ullman |first5=Diane E. |last6=Williamson |first6=Valerie M. |date=1998-08-18 |title=The nematode resistance gene Mi of tomato confers resistance against the potato aphid |journal=Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences |language=en |volume=95 |issue=17 |pages=9750–9754 |bibcode=1998PNAS...95.9750R |doi=10.1073/pnas.95.17.9750 |issn=0027-8424 |pmc=21408 |pmid=9707547 |doi-access=free}}
