Dicheirotrichus gustavii is a ground beetle which emerges from cracks or holes to feed on tidal salt marshes after dusk. Despite living in a coastal environment, it has no cycle of behaviour linked to the tides, simply scurrying for dry land when caught by the approaching sea.{{cite journal | last= Foster | first= W A | year= 1983 | title= Activity rhythms and the tide in a saltmarsh beetle Dicheirotrichus gustavi | journal= Oecologia | volume= 60 | pages= 111–113 | url= http://www.zoo.cam.ac.uk/zoostaff/foster/PDFs/Foster_1983_Oecologia.pdf | archive-url= https://wayback.archive-it.org/all/20110401174026/http://www.zoo.cam.ac.uk/zoostaff/foster/PDFs/Foster_1983_Oecologia.pdf | url-status= dead | archive-date= 2011-04-01 | doi= 10.1007/bf00379328 }} It will eat the larvae of another intertidal beetle, Bledius spectabilis, if they are left unprotected by the adult.{{cite journal | last= Wyatt | first= T D |author2=Foster, W A | year=1989 | title= Parental Care in the Subsocial Intertidal Beetle, Bledius spectabilis, in Relation to Parasitism by the Ichneumonid Wasp, Barycnemis blediator | journal= Behaviour | volume= 110 | issue = 1–4 | pages= 76–92 | doi = 10.1163/156853989x00394}}
