Research

Didemnum fragile is of medical interest as it contains shishijimicin molecules, which have been seen to have potent anti-tumor activity in HeLa cells at picomolar concentrations.{{cite journal|last1=Oku|first1=N|last2=Matsunaga|first2=S|last3=Fusetani|first3=N|title=Shishijimicins A-C, novel enediyne antitumor antibiotics from the ascidian Didemnum proliferum(1).|journal=Journal of the American Chemical Society|date=26 February 2003|volume=125|issue=8|pages=2044–5|pmid=12590521|doi=10.1021/ja0296780}} Shishijimicin A was recently synthesized.{{Cite web|title = Rice lab synthesizes cancer-killing compound|url = http://news.rice.edu/2015/07/13/rice-lab-synthesizes-cancer-killing-compound-2/|accessdate = 2015-07-13}}
