Discovery Real Time was a British television channel owned by Discovery Networks UK focused on educational and learning content.

History

It was originally launched on 9 March 1992 as The Learning Channel, United Kingdom's version of the American television network of the same name as a daytime service from Intelsat, mostly aimed at cable systems, and was initially broadcast on the Discovery Channel's frequency.{{cite news|url=http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_hb6695/is_199203/ai_n26411324/|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130501210651/http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_hb6695/is_199203/ai_n26411324/|url-status=dead|archive-date=2013-05-01|title=POPULAR EDUCATION CONTENT FOR UK CHANNEL|publisher=Screen Digest|date=March 1992}}{{cite newsgroup | title = Satnews 072 | date = 9 Mar 1992 | newsgroup = rec.video.satellite | url = http://groups.google.se/group/rec.video.satellite/browse_thread/thread/ded2a77228074e1e/f49934a5671a0305 | archive-url = https://archive.today/20120710102256/http://groups.google.se/group/rec.video.satellite/browse_thread/thread/ded2a77228074e1e/f49934a5671a0305 | url-status = dead | archive-date = 10 July 2012 }}

When the Discovery Channel launched on Astra satellite on 22 July 1993, it didn't initially carry TLC in the daytime. From 5 September 1994, it shared a transponder on the Astra 1C satellite with the Discovery Channel, which started its broadcasts at 4.00pm.{{cite newsgroup | title = SATELLITE JOURNAL ITL VOL2 NO 18 | date = 5 Sep 1994 | newsgroup = rec.video.satellite | url = http://groups.google.se/group/rec.video.satellite/browse_thread/thread/c0529cace57469bd/d0e6e21e587fe2ab | access-date = 20 October 2009 | archive-date = 14 July 2012 | archive-url = https://archive.today/20120714163152/https://groups.google.com/group/rec.video.satellite/browse_thread/thread/c0529cace57469bd/d0e6e21e587fe2ab?hl=sv | url-status = dead }} It was later rebranded as Discovery Home & Leisure on 3 April 1997,{{cite newsgroup|title=MediaScan/Sweden Calling DXers 2268|date=April 3, 1997|newsgroup=rec.radio.info|url =http://groups.google.se/group/rec.radio.info/browse_thread/thread/563e37432da2c5f6/907f15b9eacbf8f9}} but full day broadcasting started with the launch of Sky Digital from 1 October 1998. The channel was relaunched as Discovery Real Time on 7 May 2005 in the British market. The channel aimed at complementing the female-skewed Discovery Home & Health (which itself replaced Discovery Health).{{cite web|last=Shelley |first=Darren |url=http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds20619.html |title=Discovery to rebrand Health, Home & Leisure |publisher=Digital Spy |date=2005-04-14 |access-date=2013-04-23 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20060901115011/http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds20619.html |archive-date=2006-09-01 }} A sister channel called Discovery Real Time Extra was launched on 22 August 2005.{{cite web|url=http://www.theairwaves.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2164|title=Three new channels for Sky viewers|publisher=The Airwaves|date=August 22, 2005|url-status=usurped|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110724094837/http://www.theairwaves.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2164|archive-date=July 24, 2011}} On 20 March 2009, it was replaced with Discovery Shed.

Discovery Real Time is also available in some other regions, including France and Italy. The channel used to be available in Asia since October 2008, and it has become the Indian version of Discovery Turbo.

The channel closed along with Discovery Travel & Living at 6.00am on 30 April 2013, to be replaced by TLC and Investigation Discovery +1.
