Geography

Federal electoral division boundaries in Australia are determined at redistributions by a redistribution committee appointed by the Australian Electoral Commission. Redistributions occur for the boundaries of divisions in a particular state, and they occur every seven years, or sooner if a state's representation entitlement changes or when divisions of a state are malapportioned.{{cite web |last1=Muller |first1=Damon |title=The process of federal redistributions: a quick guide |url=https://www.aph.gov.au/About_Parliament/Parliamentary_Departments/Parliamentary_Library/pubs/rp/rp1718/Quick_Guides/FederalRedistributions |website=Parliament of Australia |access-date=19 April 2022 |date=14 November 2017}}

History

The division was created in 2004 and is named after Neville Bonner, the first Aboriginal Australian person to serve in the Australian Parliament. Bonner served in the federal Senate as a Queensland Liberal Senator.{{cite web | title=Profile of the electoral division of Bonner (Qld) | website=Australian Electoral Commission | date=19 November 2019 | url=https://www.aec.gov.au/profiles/qld/bonner.htm | access-date=24 October 2023}}

The seat had a notional Labor majority when it was created, but was won by the Liberal Party in 2004 by a slight margin. Kerry Rea regained the seat for Labor in 2007. Then Ross Vasta re-took the seat for the LNP at the 2010 election. Vasta then remained the MP for Bonner until the 2025 Federal Election where he lost the seat to Labor's Kara Cook.
