Dodewaard was a separate municipality until 2002, when it became a part of Kesteren. Before 1818, the municipality was called "Hien en Dodewaard".{{Repertorium Nederlandse Gemeenten}}

It also houses the now defunct Dodewaard nuclear power plant.
