Lake Donuzlav (Russian and Ukrainian: Донузлав, {{Langx|crh|Doñuzlav}}), also referred to as Donuzlav Bay, is the deepest lakeOliferov, A.M. [http://esu.com.ua/search_articles.php?id=20906 Donuzlav (ДОНУЗЛА́В)]. Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine. of Crimea ({{cvt|27|m|disp=comma}}) and biggest in Chornomorske Raion ({{cvt|47|km2|disp=comma}}). It is a protected landscape and recreational park of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.

The lake is as salty as the sea near its mouth but bottom springs make the water much less saline near the head.

Overview

Technically it is no longer a lake but rather a bay since 1961, when a 200-metre width canal was washed through the sandy peresyp separating it from the Black Sea, when the construction of a {{ill|Crimean Naval Base|lt=Soviet naval base |ru|Крымская военно-морская база}} started.{{Cite web|url=https://xn----ttbgfagjn8f.xn--p1ai/ozero-donuzlav-interesnye-fakty/|title=Озеро Донузлав: интересные факты|date=October 17, 2022|website=Государственное автономное учреждение Республики Крым}} The peresyp length is about {{cvt|12|km|mi}} with widths varying between {{cvt|0.3|km|ft}} to {{cvt|1|km|ft}}.

Donuzlav is located in Chornomorske and Saky raions (districts) at the Tarkhankut Peninsula as well as Yevpatoria Municipality. Donuzlav is one of several lakes located around the peninsula.

The length of Donuzlav is {{cvt|30|km|mi}}, a width is up to {{cvt|8.5|km|mi}}, an area of {{cvt|42|km2|mi2}} and a depth is up to {{cvt|27|m|ft}}. It has several small bays. Banks are high, steep, and winding. At separate parts of the lake, a wetland vegetation is common (i.e. common reed, cattail, others).

In the upper portion of the lakes are located two dams for fish farming, in the mid portion is a naval base. On the banks there is a wind-powered energy station ({{ill|Sakska Wind Farm|ru|Сакская ВЭС}}) with 53 wind turbines.

To the lake are headed several gulches (semi-dried streams) among which are Staryi Donuzlav, Donuzlav, Chernushka, and Burnuk.

In the northern part there is a {{ill|Donuzlav recreational park|ru|Донузлав (ландшафтно-рекреационный парк)}} of area 2,335 hectares.

Donuzlav was the location of the {{ill|Crimean Naval Base|ru|Крымская военно-морская база}} of the Soviet Union. The base was particularly notable for housing air-cushioned landing craft ({{sclass2|Zubr|LCAC|4}}). After the dissolution of the Soviet Union it was converted into the Southern Naval Base of Armed Forces of Ukraine.

On 5 March 2014, during the annexation of Crimea, Russian sailors scuttled two Russian Black Sea Fleet vessels, the anti-submarine ship {{ship|Russian cruiser|Ochakov||2}} and the rescue tugboat Shakhter, at the entrance to Donuzlav Bay to prevent Ukrainian Navy ships from accessing the Black SeaDefence Express 05.03.2014{{cite web |url=http://flot.sevastopol.info/eng/ship/largeaswdestroyers/ochakov.htm |title=Large ASW Destroyer "Ochakov" - Project 1134B / Kara class |publisher=Flot.sevastopol.info |access-date=2014-04-23}}{{cite web |url=http://flot.sevastopol.info/ship/spasat/shakhter.htm |title=Спасательное буксирное судно "Шахтер" Черноморского Флота |publisher=Flot.sevastopol.info |access-date=2014-04-23}}{{cite web |url=http://timer.od.ua/news/v_krimu_zatoplen_rossiyskiy_bol_shoy_protivolodochniy_korabl_ochakov_602.html |title=В Крыму затоплен российский большой противолодочный корабль "Очаков" • Таймер |publisher=Timer.od.ua |access-date=2014-04-23 |archive-date=2014-03-06 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140306234740/http://timer.od.ua/news/v_krimu_zatoplen_rossiyskiy_bol_shoy_protivolodochniy_korabl_ochakov_602.html |url-status=dead }} and established the Russian naval base there, reinstating its previous name.
