Renovation
In May 2018 the Surinamese FA signed a contract with construction company Structure Technics NV for the renovation of the stadium. Essed stadium must serve as a backup for international matches if the André Kamperveen stadium fails to maintain FIFA and CONCACAF stadium standards. The renovation costs are estimated at USD 1,048,000 and was funded by FIFA.{{cite news|url=https://stvs.sr/sport/2018/05/bouw-nieuwe-tribune-en-renovatie-franklin-essed-stadion/#:~:text=De%20kosten%20voor%20renovatie%20zijn,in%20het%20Franklin%20Essed%20stadion.|title=Bouw nieuwe tribune en renovatie Franklin Essed stadion|publisher=STVS|language=nl|date=2018-05-21|access-date=2018-05-21|archive-date=2024-02-28|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240228152653/https://stvs.sr/sport/2018/05/bouw-nieuwe-tribune-en-renovatie-franklin-essed-stadion/#:~:text=De%20kosten%20voor%20renovatie%20zijn,in%20het%20Franklin%20Essed%20stadion.|url-status=live}}
