The aircraft was cruising at the designated altitude; later at 23:09 PM, the pilot declared an emergency 120 kilometers (65 nautical miles) away from Algiers. Radar and radio contact was then lost as the aircraft reportedly crashed into the sea.

Search and rescue operations were conducted by the Algerian, French and Spanish authorities but suspended days later due to there being no traces of the aircraft.
