Draft:2024 Erigavo clashes

In March 1991, towards the end of the Somaliland War of Independence, the SNM took control over the Sanaag region, including its administrative seat of Erigavo from Barre regime loyalists. Erigavo has been a focal point of tension due to contested territorial claims between Somaliland, a self-declared independent state, and the SSC-Khatumo movement, which seeks autonomy for certain regions in northern Somalia.

• August 2024: Violent clashes erupted near the village of Goof, approximately 40 kilometers from Erigavo, resulting in nine deaths. • November 26, 2024: Fighting broke out in Erigavo between Somaliland security forces and armed groups, leading to nine deaths and multiple injuries. The SSC accused Somaliland of deliberately harming civilians, while Somaliland's interior minister imposed a curfew and ordered arrests in response.
• December 14-15, 2024: Violent clashes intensified in Erigavo, particularly in the town's southern areas and nearby locations. These confrontations resulted in casualties, including children injured by mortar fire.
