She is Publisher Emeritus of Washington City Paper, a member of the Leadership Greater Washington board, former board chair of The Theatre Lab and a board member of Destination DC. Ms. Austin is originally from Princeton, Illinois; she came to Washington, D.C. in the 1980s. Prior joining Theatre Washington, she held leadership positions at the Horizons Theater and Theater Leadership Lab School for Dramatic Arts.
