Career

Hampton started racing at the Sportsdrome Speedway in Indiana and the Fairgrounds Speedway in Louisville, Kentucky. He won multiple championships at the Fairgrounds, including three consecutive Figure Eight titles (1961–1963) and two New & Late Model championships (1965–1966).

= ARCA =

In the ARCA Racing Series, Hampton secured 20 career wins, ranking 11th on the all-time win list. His notable victories included two Daytona 300 wins in 1968 and 1972, as well as multiple wins at Salem Speedway and other tracks. He twice finished third in ARCA national points standings (1968, 1970).

= NASCAR =

Hampton also made four NASCAR Grand National Series starts between 1959 and 1969, earning two top-10 finishes, including a 9th place in the 1969 Daytona 500.

Personal life

Hampton operated a car dealership for over 55 years and was inducted into the Kentucky Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2010.

He passed away on April 1, 2016, in Louisville, Kentucky, at the age of 87.
