{{AFC comment|1=Three of the sources are routine listings (one of which is about this line but doesn't even use the term), and the fourth currently times out. Greenman (talk) 09:02, 28 August 2024 (UTC)}}
{{AFC comment|1=Reddit and blogs cannot be used as sources. You may want to merge the content into List of chess openings if you can find some better sources. Qcne (talk) 11:23, 30 August 2023 (UTC)}}

The Australian Defense — chess opening, beginning with the moves 1. d4 Na6.{{cite web | url=http://old.chesstempo.com/gamedb/opening/2950 | title=Australian Defense - Chess Opening }}
Details
It refers to Semi-Closed Games, is black's response to Queen's pawn opening. The name of the opening comes from the Australian Champion in 1992 and Ocean Champion in 2000, Aleksandar Wohl, International Master. In tournaments, he repeatedly and effectively used this defense, although in general this debut at world-class competitions is extremely rare.{{cite web | url=http://www.365chess.com/opening.php?m=3&n=743&ms=d4.Na6 | title=A40: Queen's pawn - 1. D4 Na6 - Chess Opening explorer }} The Australian Defense is described in his chess course by International Master (Grandmaster since 2022) {{ill|Renato Quintiliano|pt}} in 2018.{{cite web | url=http://www.modern-chess.com/beat-the-dynamic-defences-after-1-d4-d5-2-c4 | title=Beat the Dynamic Defences after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 }} This defense is often used by Hungarian grandmaster Ticia Gara.{{Cite web|url=http://2700chess.com/players/gara_ticia|title=Gara, Ticia - 2700chess.com}} Black's ideas in this defense are similar to White's Durkin Attack, the advantage of the opening is that the pawn structure is not affected.
It is recognized as somewhat dubious, but can transpose to the slightly more acceptable de Bruycker Defense in the Caro–Kann if the game continues 2. e4 c6. The Australian Defense has been played by American grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura to draw a game with Chinese grandmaster Wang Yue in 2018, English grandmaster Tony Miles in 1996 to draw a game with Swedish grandmaster Ulf Andersson,{{Cite web |title=Ulf Andersson vs Tony Miles (1996) |url=https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1020965 |access-date=2024-07-10 |website=www.chessgames.com}} and American grandmaster Andrew Tang to defeat international master Craig Hilby in the Professional Rapid Online Chess League.
