Van Calcar worked as a teacher and governess. In The Double Calling of Women (De dubbele roeping der vrouw, Amsterdam 1872) she advocated education for women. From 1877 she published the spiritual journal On the Borders of Two Worlds (Op de Grenzen van Twee Werelden). Her collection of short stories From Far Away Lands and Nearby (Uit verre landen en van nabij{{Cite web |url=https://search.worldcat.org/title/64968010 |access-date=2024-12-21 |website=search.worldcat.org}}, 1850) contains a remarkable story about Suriname.
