George Gilbert Brenkert (born November 22, 1942) is a philosopher, author, and scholar of business ethics, social and political philosophy. He is a professor emeritus at Georgetown University in the McDonough School of Business, where he previously served as a professor of business ethics and the director of the Business Ethics Institute.

Early life and education

Brenkert was born on November 22, 1942. He received a bachelor of arts from Colgate University in 1964. Brenkert pursued further studies at the University of Michigan, acquiring a master of arts in 1969 and a PhD in 1971. His doctoral dissertation was titled Wants, Prudence, and Morality.

Career

Brenkert began his teaching career in 1971 as an instructor at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he later served as an assistant professor. In 1973, he joined the University of Tennessee’s Department of Philosophy, starting from assistant professor to associate professor and later becoming a professor and department head from 1988 to 1995. In 1997, he joined Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business as a professor of business ethics, serving until his retirement in 2010. During his tenure, he directed the Georgetown Business Ethics Institute, and after his retirement, he became a professor emeritus.

His professional affiliations include serving as an academic fellow at the Ethics Resource Center and as a member of the executive committee for the Society for Business Ethics. In addition, Brenkert co-founded the Capital Area Business Ethics Network and the Transatlantic Business Ethics Conference.
