J.M.I. Recordings is a New York-based jazz record company and label founded by J. History

In 1996, Steven Mandel became a music industry professional with an assistant engineer position at Electric Lady Studios in New York. In 2004, Mandel went to Philadelphia, where he became the personal engineer for Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, following The Roots to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in 2009 then The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in 2014.{{cite news |last1=Myers |first1=Paul |title=Meet The Third Man: The Producer Who Orchestrated A Roots/Elvis Costello Collaboration |url=https://www.fastcompany.com/3019974/meet-the-third-man-the-producer-who-orchestrated-a-roots-elvis-costello-collaboration |publisher=Fast Company |date=October 23, 2013}} Cohn co-founded jazz label Brown Brothers Recordings with David Elkins in 2004, which released 2 albums.

J.M.I. Recordings was founded by Cohn and Mandel in summer 2016, after Cohn asked Mandel to form a new jazz label. Cohn is the primary investor and Mandel produces the LPs. In 2017, Cohn and Mandel brought in limited partner, engineer David Slitzky.
