Early life and education
Gathu was born on February 11th, 1970, in Nairobi, Kenya. Career
From 1998 to 2002, Gathu hosted KBC's Café Culture (breakfast show). During the same period, he worked at Capital FM as a Host and Programs Controller for hits, not homework.
From 2002 to 2004, he worked for KISS 100 as the People's Parliament anchor. From 2004 to 2006, he hosted the afternoon drive on Classic 105 and served as the Programs Controller. He also worked as the morning Concept Creator for Maina and King'ang'i on Classic 105 FM.
From 2006 to 2010, he served as the head of radio at HOT 96 FM, which is owned by Royal Media Services (RMS).

He worked for KTN on various capacities. These include;
- Host daily music shows – 1990 to 2001 (Rap Em’, KassKass, Rastrut, Jam-a-Delic, Rhythmix and Club Kiboko)
- Host Niaje – 1999 to 2000
- Host What it takes – 1999 to 2001
- Host Doctor’s Practice – 2022
Jimmy then joined KBC, where he hosted Hatua (a political chat program for teenagers) from 2002 to 2006. He also hosted Mambo leo (current affairs) from 2004 to 2006. He was the host of Citizen TV's Power Breakfast from 2010 to 2013. Jimmy has been in a number of Kenyan blockbuster films and screenplays. These include Saikati 2 (1995), Changes Seasons 2 and 3, which broadcast on MNET from 2010 to 2012. He also appeared in Nairobi Half-Life, which was released in 2012.
The veteran media personality portrayed President Kijana in State House (2013).
