Mukesh Kumar was born in July 1966, in India. He holds a PhD in Media Studies from Lucknow University (2013); his research focused on Television Rating Points (TRPs), television news, and the media market. He earned a master's degree in mass communication from A.P.S. University, Rewa, and a bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communication from Dr. Hari Singh Gour University, Sagar, where he was a gold medallist. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree from A.P.S. University.

He has launched six regional and national Hindi news channels and is known for his work in political journalism and content strategy.

Kumar has played a significant role in media education in India. From 2016 to 2019, he served as Professor and Dean at the Faculty of Mass Communication and Media Technology, SGT University, Gurugram. During his tenure, he:

• Curated a Media Museum with legacy broadcasting equipment
• Initiated the media festival Xpressions
• Conducted national seminars and faculty development programs
• Partnered with FTII to organize film appreciation courses

From 2019 to 2021, he was an Adjunct Professor at Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication (MCU), where he taught TV journalism, media law and ethics, and social media practices. He also conducted workshops on mobile journalism (MoJo), blog writing, and news scripting.

Kumar has served as an external examiner for the Rabindranath Tagore Institute, Mauritius, and contributed to curriculum development for institutions such as the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC).

Kumar's research interests include media ethics, misinformation, digital journalism, and media literacy. He has presented papers at national and international conferences, including:
