A score or level of 1 and 2 are considered not proficient meaning the student has not met state standards.To to be considered proficient on an EOG, a student must score a 3, 4, or 5 in all subjects that the EOG was administered for. As of May 5, 2025 The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) has released resources for educators and students from the NC 2020-2021 school year for EOGs, BOGs, and EOCs.{{Cite web |title=Released Tests {{!}} NC DPI |url=https://www.dpi.nc.gov/document-terms/released-tests |access-date=2025-05-05 |website=www.dpi.nc.gov}} These are past assessments that were administered and include answer keys and test questions. Anything that is Level 3 and above is considered proficient and meets NC Readiness Standards. All scores that are non-proficient are not up to standard and students who do not meet state standards are able to take a second chance test to improve their score.

Like the Mathematics EoG, all students in 3-8 grade have to be given the Reading EoG every year.

The Science EoG measures the students proficiency in Science course and demonstrates what the test taker has learned throughout the school year.

According to NCDPI, Science EoGs are to be taken in the last 10 days of the school year in an traditional school year calendar.

Students who are given the EOG do not usually have the EOG determine retention for them. The EOG shows a students proficiency and does not demonstrate a students capabilities and thought process to their full extent. For this reason, a student that scores a 1 or 2 in the non-proficiency level will not be held back only because of this score.
