Pithoragarh Depot is a bus depot operated by the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC), located in the Pithoragarh district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. This depot provides regular bus services within the Pithoragarh district, as well as to other regions of the state and neighboring states. Its administrative operations are under the Tanakpur Division of the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation.

History

The history of Pithoragarh Depot predates the formation of Uttarakhand state. It was established in the 1970s under the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC). The depot's creation addressed the need for reliable public transport in the region, characterized by its border location and challenging terrain, and aimed to improve regional connectivity.

Initially, the depot operated limited but vital bus services. These primarily included routes such as Pithoragarh–Tanakpur, Pithoragarh–Champawat, and Pithoragarh–Dharchula.

After Uttarakhand state was formed in November 2000, the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) was established in 2003, bringing Pithoragarh Depot under its administration. Since then, the depot's services have continuously expanded, and it now operates regular and long-distance routes both within Uttarakhand and to other states.

Routes and Services

According to recent data, Pithoragarh Depot operates approximately 18 bus services daily, benefiting over 600 passengers each day. These services connect Pithoragarh to various districts within Uttarakhand, neighboring states, and the national capital, Delhi.

==== ::- Current Longest Route: Pithoragarh–Dharchula–Seraghat–Delhi ====

The longest bus service currently operated by Pithoragarh Depot runs on the Pithoragarh–Dharchula–Seraghat–Delhi route. This is a five-day round trip, detailed as follows:

  • Day 1: The bus covers approximately 100 km from Pithoragarh to Dharchula.
  • Day 2: The bus departs from Dharchula for Delhi, via Seraghat.
  • Day 3: The bus arrives in Delhi in the morning. On the evening of the same day, the bus begins its return journey to Dharchula.
  • Day 4: The bus reaches Dharchula and stays there overnight.
  • Day 5: The bus departs from Dharchula for Pithoragarh, completing the trip.

This entire journey covers a total distance of approximately 1,366 kilometers, making it the longest route for Pithoragarh Depot. This service acts as a vital transport link, connecting the border region of Dharchula with the national capital.

==== ::- Former Longest Route: Pithoragarh–Munsiyari–Bageshwar–Delhi ====

Previously, the longest and most challenging route operated by Pithoragarh Depot was the Pithoragarh–Munsiyari–Bageshwar–Delhi service, which also had a total duration of five days:

  • The journey would begin with an approximate 127 km stretch from Pithoragarh to Munsiyari.
  • On the second day, the bus would travel about 600 km from Munsiyari to Delhi, via Bageshwar.
  • Following this, the bus would return from Delhi, via Munsiyari, arriving back in Pithoragarh on the fifth day.

This service covered a total distance of approximately 1,460 kilometers. Currently, after the formation of Bageshwar Depot, the operation of this route has been transferred from Pithoragarh Depot to Bageshwar Depot, and the service is now run under their purview.

Fleet and Infrastructure

Pithoragarh Depot operates a fleet of approximately 90 buses, which includes 28 Bharat Stage-VI (BS-VI) compliant buses, 16 BS-IV vehicles, and a number of BS-III category buses. This diverse fleet enables the depot to effectively manage both long-distance and local routes.

The depot has its own workshop located in Pithoragarh, which was recently renovated and is equipped with modern facilities. This workshop plays a crucial role in ensuring regular maintenance, repairs, and travel safety for the buses.

The main bus stand in Pithoragarh serves as the central point for passenger boarding and alighting. Additionally, construction of a new bus terminal is underway, aiming to improve passenger amenities and increase operational capacity.

Operations and Management

Pithoragarh Depot operates under the Tanankpur Division of the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC). This division is one of the three main administrative regions of the corporation; the other two divisions are Dehradun and Nainital.

The depot employs approximately 350 staff members, including drivers, conductors, mechanics, and administrative personnel. This entire workforce is responsible for the smooth and effective operation of the depot.

Cultural Significance

Pithoragarh Depot stands out as one of the most prominent depots within the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC). It's particularly recognized for its distinctively decorated buses, which prominently feature traditional symbols like the Trishul (trident) and Khanda (double-edged sword) on the front of the main buses.

This long-standing tradition of adorning buses with these symbols has been maintained for many years. The depot's drivers and staff play a crucial role in keeping this tradition alive. Their continuous efforts not only contribute to Pithoragarh Depot being counted among the corporation's leading depots but also ensure its renown for this unique identity.

Modes of Service Delivery

Passengers can access services operated by Pithoragarh Depot through various booking platforms provided by the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC):

  • Online Booking Portal: Tickets can be reserved via the official UTC website, offering a convenient and secure online booking experience.
  • Booking Counters: Physical ticket counters are available at the Pithoragarh bus station and other major transit points along the routes.
  • Pathik Mobile App: UTC's official mobile application, Pathik, enables passengers to view bus schedules, track buses in real-time, and book tickets directly from their smartphones.
