History
In the 15th century AD, this Charipara of Mymensingh was the capital of Raja Nabaranga Roy. Around his capital, within a radius of four miles, many soldiers, paiks (foot soldiers), officials, palanquin bearers, boatmen, and other classes of workers resided.
Gopinath Jiu Temple
The temple is located in the Bhogbetal area of Achmita, three kilometers north of the Katiadi Upazila headquarters in Kishoreganj. This ancient temple was built in 1575 during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar by feudal king Nabaranga Roy. Next to the temple lies the Kutaman Dighi , which stands as a memorial to King Nabaranga Roy. Architecturally, the temple bears a resemblance to ancient temples of Odisha, India. According to popular legend, King Nabaranga Roy began the construction of the temple after receiving a divine vision in a dream. At the entrance to the temple is a dilapidated bridge, designed in the style of Panam City. In addition, there are several other structures: the Dolmanrit Adi Temple, the main temple, the Jhulan Temple, the Gundicha Temple, and three ponds.This temple is believed to be the site of the first and largest Rath Yatra (chariot festival) in East Bengal. At present, many of the temple’s structures are gradually deteriorating.The very first and largest Rath Yatra in Bangladesh was held at the Gopinath Temple.{{Cite web |last=SAMAKAL |title=কটিয়াদীর গোপীনাথের রথযাত্রা বাতিল |url=https://samakal.com/whole-country/article/25000/%E0%A6%97%E0%A7%8B%E0%A6%AA%E0%A7%80%E0%A6%A8%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%A5%E0%A7%87%E0%A6%B0-%E0%A6%B0%E0%A6%A5%E0%A6%AF%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%A4%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%B0%E0%A6%BE-%E0%A6%AC%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%A4%E0%A6%BF%E0%A6%B2 |access-date=2025-05-26 |website=কটিয়াদীর গোপীনাথের রথযাত্রা বাতিল |language=en}}{{Cite web |last=timetouchnews.com |title=ঈশাখাঁ'র স্মৃতি বিজড়িত প্রাচীন স্থাপত্যের নিদর্শন গোপীনাথ জিউর আখড়া! |url=https://timetouchnews.com/news/news-details/28959 |access-date=2025-05-26 |website=timetouchnews.com |language=en-US}}
- According local history
In the 16th century, Isa Khan was one of the prominent Baro-Bhuyans of Bengal and the ruler of the chief Bhati region. During that time, while traveling from his Egarosindur fort to Jangalbari via the road adjacent to the temple, he was enchanted by the aroma of the temple's offerings and rituals. He paused his journey and accepted the hospitality of the temple. Deeply impressed by the hospitality, Isa Khan, the brave Dewan of Jangalbari, donated tax-free land to the temple. From that time, the area came to be known as Bhogbetal. In 1595, Isa Khan was besieged at the Egarosindur fort by Emperor Akbar’s general, Man Singh. After victory, the triumphant Mughal soldiers celebrated their success on the broad road that is now the site of the present-day Rath Mela. In 1897, a devastating earthquake destroyed the original main temple along with its then-existing Pancharatna structure.
Around the same period, Kishoreganj poet Nityananda Das mentioned in his work Premvilas that Mahaprabhu Sri Chaitanya Dev, on his way through Egarosindur in Pakundia, accepted the hospitality of Vaishnava Lakshminath Lahiri of Achmita. He stayed for 3 to 4 days and led Nama Sankirtan (devotional chanting) at the Bhogbetal Temple. Additionally, an article by Vishweshwar Das Gupta published in the Bengali periodical Udbodhan in 1217 Bangla (corresponding to 1810 AD), published from Kolkata, reveals many unknown facts about the then Gopinath Bari.{{Cite web |last=bdnews24.com |title=ঐতিহ্য আর কালের সাক্ষী কটিয়াদীর শ্রী শ্রী গোপীনাথ মন্দির |url=https://bangla.bdnews24.com/blog/187625 |access-date=2025-05-26 |website=ঐতিহ্য আর কালের সাক্ষী কটিয়াদীর শ্রী শ্রী গোপীনাথ মন্দির |language=en}}
