Haggerty earned his Bachelor of Science degree in geology from the University of Alberta and later obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. in hydrogeology from Stanford University.

In 2022, Haggerty was appointed as the Executive Vice President and Provost at Louisiana State University. In this role, he oversees academic programs, faculty affairs, student affairs, online education and research initiatives across the university.
