The Santa Fe Trail segments in Morton County, Kansas are all on the north side of the Cimarron River. The river runs roughly east-north-east through this area. The Point of Rocks--Middle Spring Santa Fe Trail Historic District includes seven contributing resources: the Point of Rocks (a natural landmark and navigational aid), Middle Spring (a natural spring), four trail segments, and a DAR monument. The district is {{convert|467.5|acre|km2}} in area, of which {{convert|34|acre|km2}} are the resources themselves. The Point of Rocks and the spring were two significant stopping locations on Santa Fe Trail. An overlook on the Point of Rocks looks out over former Point of Rocks ranch area. A Daughters of the American Revolution monument was placed on the Point of Rocks in April 1914. Soon after, on May 1, 1914, the a flood of the Cimarron River destroyed hay and numerous buildings of the Point of Rocks ranch, as well as drowning two daughters of the Brite family.

The district was added to the National Register on April 10, 2013. Santa Fe Trail — Cimarron National Grassland Segment 1 is located {{convert|2.0|mi}} south of K-51 at Colorado–Kansas state line near Elkhart in Morton County, Kansas. Total area of the segment covers 66.19 acres (0.27 sqkm), with the total area of the swale being 13.26 acres (0.05 sqkm).
