Nance is from Eugene, Oregon and graduated from North Eugene High School. They are openly non-binary and mentored a queer teen in Klamath Falls. As part of a suggestion of self-care by a therapist, they decided to attempt birdwatching as a hobby. Nance cite an encounter with a western tanager and their process in attempting to identify its species to have made him invested in the hobby. They are known for including numerious bird references in their songs. Nance's live shows features approximately 30 bird references, which the audience is invited to count using programs that include more than 50 bird species.
