As a Naval Flight Officer, she flew 67 aircraft types and influenced the repeal of combat exclusion laws, allowing women to fly combat missions. Beckman now flies for Boeing Commercial Airplanes with over 5,000 flight hours in 71 aircraft types and is a founding board member of Women in Aviation International.
After graduating from high school in 1970, Beckman joined the Navy, inspired by a sense of duty and seeking educational opportunities. She retired in 1999 as a commander, having served in various roles, including NORAD liaison and fleet support officer for the Naval Space Surveillance System. She was among the first women to become a naval flight officer since World War Two, earning this distinction in 1982.
Beckman holds degrees in aerospace engineering and business administration. She mentors young women in aviation and serves on several aviation-related boards and committees.
