History

The Dresden Plant was first conceived in 2000 when Dresden Energy, LLC, a subsidiary of Dominion Energy, proposed the construction of a combined cycle power plant utilizing natural gas as its energy source.{{cite web|url=http://dis.puc.state.oh.us/TiffToPDf/R8ZESZ@NUZP9227G.pdf|title=00-0686-EL-BGN|publisher=Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO)|date=April 13, 2000|accessdate=August 20, 2019}} Construction began in 2001, but numerous delays and rising natural gas prices made the plant uneconomical at that time.{{cite news|url=https://www.powermag.com/american-electric-power-finally-flips-the-switch-on-beleaguered-ohio-plant/|title=American Electric Power Finally Flips the Switch on Beleaguered Ohio Plant|last=Overton|first=Thomas W.|publisher=Power Engineering|date=February 23, 2012|accessdate=August 20, 2019}} In 2007, AEP would purchase the partially built Dresden Plant from a subsidiary of Dominion for $85 million.{{cite news|url=https://www.power-eng.com/articles/2007/09/aep-completes-purchase-of-dresden-plant.html|title=AEP completes purchase of Dresden plant|publisher=Power Engineering|date=September 21, 2007|accessdate=August 19, 2019}} The Dresden Plant would remain in an idle state with a skeleton crew until 2011 when AEP recommenced construction at the site.{{cite news|url=https://www.elp.com/articles/2011/01/aep-to-complete-construction-of-dresden-natural-gas-plant.html|title=AEP to complete construction of Dresden natural gas plant|publisher=Electric Light & Power|date=January 21, 2011|accessdate=August 19, 2019}} Commercial operations began on February 1, 2012. Equipment

The Dresden Plant features three units. There are two, General Electric, 7FA gas turbines which are fed into heat recovery steam generators designed by Vogt-NEM and a single, General Electric, D11 steam turbine generator. Both gas turbines are equipped with LO-NOx burners and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems to reduce nitrogen oxide ({{NOx}}) emissions.
