History

In 2008, Toronto-based video game developer Pseudo Interactive laid off the majority of its staff before closing down completely.{{cite web |url=https://www.polygon.com/2012/10/26/3547694/how-drinkbox-studios-grit-raised-a-studio-and-got-guacamelee-funded |title=How Drinkbox Studios' grit raised an indie developer and got Guacamelee funded |author= |date= |website=polygon.com}} Out of the laid-off employees, many left Toronto to work in other places, while three programmers, Chris Harvey, Ryan MacLean and Graham Smith, stayed to found their own game studio in April that year.{{cite web |url=https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2016-04-29-drinkbox-cuts-through-the-noise |title=Drinkbox cuts through the noise |author= |date= |website=gamesindustry.biz}} Their idea was to create a game company that would create games they would want to play. Initially, the company was called Not a Number Software, but the team quickly considered the name to be a bad choice and changed it to DrinkBox Studios.{{cite web |url=https://www.gamesradar.com/ask-indie-developer-how-did-your-indie-career-begin/ |title=Ask an indie developer: How did your indie career begin? |author= |date= |website=gamesradar.com}} In the weeks following the DrinkBox' foundation, they hired a senior artist and a designer to move forward with the company as a five-man team.
