The corporation of the ancient borough of Durham and Framwelgate was reformed by the Municipal Corporations Act 1835.{{cite web|first=William|last=Page|title=The City of Durham: Jurisdictions|url=http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=42605|work=A History of the County of Durham: Volume 3|publisher=British History Online|pages=53–62|year=1928|access-date=18 October 2009 }}

The borough was abolished in 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972. Its former area was merged with Brandon and Byshottles Urban District and Durham Rural District, to become the new City of Durham non-metropolitan district.{{cite book|title=Local government in England and Wales: A Guide to the New System|year=1974|publisher=HMSO|location=London|isbn=0-11-750847-0|pages=46,114}}
