The Dutch identity card ({{Langx|nl|nederlandse identiteitskaart}} {{IPA|nl|ˈneːdərlɑntsə ʔidɛntiˈtɛitskaːrt|}}) is an official non-compulsory identity document issued to Dutch nationals in the European part of the Netherlands and certain diplomatic missions. It has similar dimensions and structure as those of a regular bank card.{{Cite web |title=Identity card |publisher=Dutch Government |date=24 September 2007 |url=http://www.paspoortinformatie.nl/english/Travel_documents/Identity_card |access-date=11 May 2010}}
Use
All Dutch citizens from the age of 14 are required to be able to show a valid identity document when the police or other enforcement officers ask for identification.{{Cite web |title=Identificatieplicht |publisher=Dutch Government |url=http://www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/paspoort-en-identificatie/identificatieplicht |access-date=4 August 2013 |language=nl |archive-date=2 April 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220402225742/http://www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/paspoort-en-identificatie/identificatieplicht |url-status=dead }} The identity card is commonly used for this purpose, but other identity documents such as a passport or driving licence may be used instead.
The Dutch identity card is also a valid means of personal identification in a number of countries outside the Netherlands and may be used as a travel document in those countries in place of a Dutch passport.

As of 26 August 2006, newly issued identity cards are provided with a chip containing the information mentioned.{{Cite web|title=Wat is een elektronisch reisdocument en welke gegevens bevat de chip hierin? |publisher=Dutch Government |url=http://www.rijksoverheid.nl/documenten-en-publicaties/vragen-en-antwoorden/wat-is-een-elektronisch-reisdocument-en-welke-gegevens-bevat-de-chip-hierin.html |access-date=10 May 2010 |language=nl}} Since May 2016, the identity card no longer contains the holder's fingerprints.{{cite news|title=Zonder vingerafdruk geen paspoort, wel identiteitskaart |url=https://www.volkskrant.nl/nieuws-achtergrond/zonder-vingerafdruk-geen-paspoort-wel-identiteitskaart~b283c213/ |access-date=7 June 2018 |work=de Volkskrant |date=25 May 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180607125816/https://www.volkskrant.nl/nieuws-achtergrond/zonder-vingerafdruk-geen-paspoort-wel-identiteitskaart~b283c213/# |archive-date=2018-06-07 |language=nl |url-status=dead }}{{cite news |title=Raad van State: vingerafdruk op identiteitskaart niet verplicht |url=https://www.ad.nl/nieuws/raad-van-state-vingerafdruk-op-identiteitskaart-niet-verplicht~a5223367/ |access-date=7 June 2018 |work=Algemeen Dagblad |date=25 May 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180607130207/https://www.ad.nl/nieuws/raad-van-state-vingerafdruk-op-identiteitskaart-niet-verplicht~a5223367/# |archive-date=2018-06-07 |language=nl |url-status=dead }} The chip has been included due to European regulations.
Validity
The Dutch identity card is a valid travel document within all of Europe (except Belarus, Russia, Ukraine and United Kingdom) as well as Georgia, Montserrat (max. 14 days), Turkey and on organised tours to Tunisia. {{Cite web |title=Dutch passport, ID card |work=Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Netherlands) |url=http://www.minbuza.nl/en/Services/Consular_Services/Dutch_passport_ID_card |access-date=15 May 2010 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100501142603/http://www.minbuza.nl/en/Services/Consular_Services/Dutch_passport_ID_card |archive-date=1 May 2010 |url-status=dead }}
Validity in EU/EFTA states is based on membership of the European Union, while validity in Turkey is based on the "European Agreement on Regulations governing the Movement of Persons between Member States of the Council of Europe".{{Cite web |title=European Agreement on Regulations governing the Movement of Persons between Member States of the Council of Europe; CETS No.: 025 |work=Council of Europe |url=http://conventions.coe.int/Treaty/Commun/QueVoulezVous.asp?NT=025&CM=8&DF=15/05/2010&CL=ENG |access-date=15 May 2010}}
Since the document is defined within the Dutch Passport Law (Paspoortwet) as a "travel document of the European part of the Netherlands" rather than a "travel document of the Kingdom",{{Cite web |title=Paspoortwet |work=Dutch Government |url=http://wetten.overheid.nl/BWBR0005212/geldigheidsdatum_02-12-2010 |access-date=2 December 2010 |language=nl}} this identity card is not issued or valid in the ABC islands or the SSS islands.{{Cite web |title=De gevolgen van de staatkundige veranderingen |work=Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations |url=http://www.bprbzk.nl/GBA/Nieuws/De_gevolgen_van_de_staatkundige_veranderingen |access-date=2 December 2010 |language=nl}}
An identity card is normally valid for a period of 10 years for adults and 5 years for minors.
European identity card
Before the introduction of the Dutch identity card (1 October 2001) in credit card format, an ID2-format European identity card was issued.{{Cite web |title=Antwoorden op kamervragen over rijbewijzen als identiteitsbewijs |work=Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations |date=19 December 2006 |url=http://www.jaarverslagpolitie.nl/tijdelijk2010/actueel/kamerstukken?ActItmIdt=103984 |access-date=18 August 2010 |language=nl }}{{dead link|date=September 2017 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} This card was also machine-readable and was valid for the same group of countries (but not for 11 out of 12 EU countries which acceded in 2004 and 2007).{{Cite web |title=European identity card (back) |work=Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations |date=25 June 2009 |url=http://www.paspoortinformatie.nl/english/Authenticity_features/Model_1997/Dutch_travel_documents/Travel_documents/European_identity_card/Back |access-date=11 May 2010}} The card contained also information on the bearer's address and had fields in English, Dutch and French. After introduction of the Dutch identity card, existing European identity cards remained valid until expiry.
