Life and career

Dylan Guthro was exposed to music since birth as the son of Cape Breton singer-songwriter Bruce Guthro.{{cite web |url=http://www.pictouadvocate.com/2011/12/07/father-son-guthros-team-up-for-show-at-glasgow-square/ |last=Harvie |first=Debbi |title=Father-son Guthros team up for show at Glasgow Square |work=www.pictouadvocate.com |publisher=The Pictou Advocate |location=Pictou, Nova Scotia |date=December 7, 2011 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150924073112/http://www.pictouadvocate.com/2011/12/07/father-son-guthros-team-up-for-show-at-glasgow-square/ |archivedate=September 24, 2015 }} While on tour with his father, Guthro played some demos he had recorded of his own material to musician Dave Gunning. Gunning was eager to help transform the demos into a full-fledged album. What eventually became All That's True was recorded and mixed over a number of different sessions during the course of six months. Bruce Guthro co-wrote five of the album's songs, and it was not the first time they had collaborated; Dylan had co-written four on Bruce's previous release, No Final Destination.

All That's True (co-produced by Gunning and Bruce Guthro) was released in 2012. It was called "one of the strongest debut albums" of the year by a music critic in the Prince Edward Island Guardian, and won the Best New Artist Recording of the Year at the Nova Scotia Music Awards in 2012.{{cite web |url=http://www.theguardian.pe.ca/Living/2012-02-18/article-2898877/A-debut-album-that&rsquos-sure-to-delight/1 |last=Gallant |first=Doug |title=A debut album that's sure to delight |work=www.theguardian.pe.ca |publisher=The Guardian |location=Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island |date=February 18, 2012}} The album also received a number of placements on the popular Canadian television series, Degrassi: The Next Generation.{{cite web |url=http://music.cbc.ca/#!/artists/Dylan-Guthro |title=Dylan Guthro |work=music.cbc.ca |publisher=CBC |location=Toronto, Ontario |accessdate=December 2, 2014}}{{cite web |url=http://www.ngnews.ca/Blog-Article/b/25515/Dylan-Guthro |last=Mainville |first=Fleur |title=Dylan Guthro |work=www.ngnews.ca |publisher=The News |location=New Glasgow, Nova Scotia |date=January 8, 2014}} Guthro has toured extensively in Canada, as well as Europe.

Guthro's 2014 release, "Do It All Again," was written with singer-songwriter David Myles, and produced by rapper Classified. The song placed in the finals in the 2015 USA Songwriting Competition in the R&B Category.{{cite web |url=http://www.songwriting.net/winners |title=The USA Songwriting Competition, 2015 Results |work=www.cbc.ca |publisher=USA Songwriting Competition |access-date=July 19, 2016}}

Also in 2014, Guthro made his producing debut, when he co-produced singer-songwriter Dave Sampson's debut album, "No Pressure No Diamonds."{{cite web |url=http://www.cbc.ca/nb/mt/east-coast-music/2014/06/music-review-dave-sampson---no-pressure-no-diamonds.html |last=Mersereau |first=Bob |title=East Coast Music with Bob Mersereau |work=www.cbc.ca |publisher=CBC |location=Toronto, Ontario |date=June 9, 2014}}

Guthro has co-written songs with artists of many different genres, and over the years became more and more involved in working with local hip-hop and EDM artists, resulting in three features on Quake Matthews’ latest album Rap Music.{{cite web |url=http://www.hiphopcanada.com/2015/03/quake-matthews-rap-music-album |title=Quake Matthews – Rap Music (Album) |work=www.hiphopcanada.com |publisher=HipHopCanada.com |location=Ottawa, Ontario |date=March 6, 2015 |access-date=August 2, 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160815123420/http://www.hiphopcanada.com/2015/03/quake-matthews-rap-music-album |archive-date=August 15, 2016 |url-status=dead }} He also had several co-writing credits on Neon Dreams’ album The Last of Us including being featured alongside rapper Waka Flocka Flame on the single "High."

In 2015, Guthro and fellow singer-songwriters Carleton Stone and Breagh Mackinnon united to form the band Port Cities. The band makes singer-songwriter-style pop music featuring both two- and three-part harmonies. They originally met at the Gordie Sampson Songcamp in Cape Breton early in the summer of 2011, and have been playing together as a threesome for a few years before officially becoming a band.{{cite web |url=http://www.cbc.ca/news/port-cities-latest-1.3201615 |title=Port Cities Latest (online interview) |work=www.cbc.ca |publisher=CBC |location=Toronto, Ontario |date=August 24, 2015}} The band recorded their debut album in both Cape Breton and Nashville with producer/songwriter Gordie Sampson which was released in February 2017.{{Cite web|url=https://exclaim.ca/music/article/port_cities-port_cities_album_stream|title=Port Cities 'Port Cities' (Album stream) | Exclaim!}}{{cite web |url=https://www.localxpress.ca/local-news/port-cities-brighten-up-cbc-searchlight-finalists-298611 |last=Cooke |first=Stephen |title=Port Cities brighten up CBC Searchlight finalists |work=www.localxpress.ca |publisher=Village Media |location=Halifax, Nova Scotia |date=May 6, 2016 |access-date=August 2, 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160815211127/https://www.localxpress.ca/local-news/port-cities-brighten-up-cbc-searchlight-finalists-298611 |archive-date=August 15, 2016 |url-status=dead }}

In July 2016, Guthro released a self-titled solo urban pop EP, which includes tracks co-written with his two Port Cities bandmates, as well as collaborations with Quake Matthews and members of Neon Dreams.{{cite web |url=http://exclaim.ca/music/article/dylan_guthro-dance_on_me |last=Murphy |first=Sarah |title=Dylan Guthro, "Dance on Me" |work=www.exclaim.ca |location=Toronto, Ontario |date=July 12, 2016}}{{cite web |url=http://www.hiphopcanada.com/2016/07/dylan-guthro-releases-here-till-the-mornin-with-quake-matthews-drops-three-track-ep/ |last=Jay |first=Sarah |title=Dylan Guthro releases "Here Till the Mornin'" with Quake Matthews; drops three-track EP |work=www.hiphopcanada.com |publisher=HipHopCanada.com |location=Toronto, Ontario |date=July 15, 2016 |access-date=August 2, 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160815110934/http://www.hiphopcanada.com/2016/07/dylan-guthro-releases-here-till-the-mornin-with-quake-matthews-drops-three-track-ep/ |archive-date=August 15, 2016 |url-status=dead }}
