Dyssodia is a small genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. Many species formerly included in Dyssodia are now treated as members of other related genera, including Thymophylla or Adenophyllum. Dyssodia papposa is usually retained in this genus. The name is derived from the Greek δυσοδια (dusodia), meaning "ill-smelling".{{cite book |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=agbm4S1eCQsC |first1=Joel Ellis |last1=Holloway |first2=Amanda |last2=Neill |title=A Dictionary of Common Wildflowers of Texas & the Southern Great Plains |publisher=TCU Press |year=2005 |isbn=978-0-87565-309-9 |page=58}}
Several species of Dyssodia (sensu lato) have found their way into the nursery trade and are relatively popular flowering annuals for hot, dry sites. Generally sold as threadleaf dyssodia (Dyssodia tenuisecta) and golden dyssodia (Dyssodia cf. pentachaeta). They perform best in well-drained soil.
Phytochemistry
Two species of the genus, D. acerosa and D. pentachaeta have been studied for their essential oil content.{{cite thesis |last=Huang |first=John Yu-Chei |date=1875 |title=Investigation of the Essential Oils of the Genus Dyssodia |type=Masters thesis |chapter= |publisher=University of Texas, El Paso |docket= |oclc= |url=https://www.proquest.com/docview/302786181 |access-date=19 October 2021|id={{ProQuest|302786181}} }}
