EPrints is a free and open-source software package for building open access repositories that are compliant with the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). It shares many of the features commonly seen in document management systems, but is primarily used for institutional repositories and scientific journals.{{Cite web |url=http://www.eprints.org/community/blog/index.php?/archives/178-Using-EPrints-v3-plugins-to-produce-an-OA-journal.html |title=Using EPrints v3 plugins to produce an OA journal |access-date=22 December 2023 |archive-date=2016-03-04 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304054848/http://www.eprints.org/community/blog/index.php?/archives/178-Using-EPrints-v3-plugins-to-produce-an-OA-journal.html |url-status=live }} EPrints has been developed at the University of Southampton School of Electronics and Computer Science and released under the GPL-3.0-or-later license.{{Cite magazine |last1=Tansley |first1=Robert |last2=Harnad |first2=Stevan |date=October 2000 |title=Eprints.org Software for Creating Institutional and Individual Open Archives |url=https://www.dlib.org/dlib/october00/10inbrief.html#HARNAD |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240927035021/http://www.dlib.org/dlib/october00/10inbrief.html#HARNAD |archive-date=2024-09-27 |access-date=2024-11-14 |magazine=D-Lib Magazine (In Brief) |volume=10 |issue=6 |doi=10.1045/october2000-inbrief |doi-access=free |issn=1082-9873}}

The EPrints software is not to be confused with "Eprints" (or "e-prints"), which are preprints (before peer review) and postprints (after peer review), of research journal articles (eprints = preprints + postprints).

History

EPrints was created in 2000 as a direct outcome of the 1999 Santa Fe meeting{{Cite web|url=http://www.openarchives.org/meetings/|title=Open Archives Initiative: Meeting History|access-date=20 August 2007|archive-date=28 September 2007|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070928044200/http://www.openarchives.org/meetings/|url-status=live}} that launched what eventually became the OAI-PMH.

The EPrints software was enthusiastically received[http://resolver.caltech.edu/CaltechLIB:2001.004 Sponsler, Ed and Van de Velde, Eric F. Version 3 of the software was officially released on 24 January 2007 at the Open Repositories 2007 Conference{{Cite web |url=http://openrepositories.org/ |title=Open repositories |access-date=20 August 2007 |archive-date=22 November 2007 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071122103703/http://openrepositories.org/ |url-status=live }} and was described by its developers as "a major leap forward in functionality, giving even more control and flexibility to repository managers, depositors, researchers and technical administrators".{{Cite web|url=http://www.eprints.org/software/v3/|title=Index of /Software/V3|access-date=20 August 2007|archive-date=22 November 2007|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071122043731/http://www.eprints.org/software/v3/|url-status=live}}

Technology

EPrints is a Web and command-line application based on the LAMP architecture (but is written in Perl rather than PHP). It has been successfully run under Linux, Solaris and Mac OS X.{{cite web |url=http://www.eprints.org/documentation/tech/php/intro.php |title=Tech. Documentation - Introduction |website=www.eprints.org |access-date=12 January 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071109184844/http://www.eprints.org/documentation/tech/php/intro.php |archive-date=9 November 2007 |url-status=dead}} A version for Microsoft Windows was released 17 May 2010.{{Cite web|url=http://files.eprints.org/544/|title=ePrints 3.2.1 - ePrints Files|access-date=9 July 2010|archive-date=17 June 2010|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100617033052/http://files.eprints.org/544/|url-status=live}}

Version 3 of the software introduced a (Perl-based) plugin architecture for importing and exporting data, converting objects (for search engine indexing) and user interface widgets.{{cite web|url=https://wiki.eprints.org/w/Preservation_Support|title=Preservation Support|website=wiki.eprints.org|access-date=22 December 2023|archive-date=7 March 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230307044928/https://wiki.eprints.org/w/Preservation_Support|url-status=live}}

Configuring an EPrints repository involves modifying configuration files written in Perl or XML. The appearance of a repository is controlled by HTML templates, CSS stylesheets and inline images. While EPrints is shipped with an English translation it has been translated to other languages through (redistributable) language-specific XML phrase files. Existing translations include Bulgarian, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish and Ukrainian.{{Cite web|url=http://files.eprints.org/view/type/translation.html|title=Browse by Type - ePrints Files|access-date=20 August 2007|archive-date=27 September 2007|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070927180056/http://files.eprints.org/view/type/translation.html|url-status=live}}
