"Easier" is a song by Australian pop rock band 5 Seconds of Summer, released on 23 May 2019 through Interscope Records as both the lead single from their fourth studio album Calm (2020) and their first release through the label.{{cite web|url=https://www.instagram.com/p/BxopF3LHr80/ |archive-url=https://ghostarchive.org/iarchive/s/instagram/BxopF3LHr80 |archive-date=24 December 2021 |url-access=registration|title=5 Seconds of Summer on Instagram: "EASIER // 05/23/2019"|via=Instagram|access-date=1 June 2019}}{{cbignore}} Billboard magazine included the song on their 100 Best Songs of 2019 list at number 79.{{Cite magazine|url=https://www.billboard.com/articles/news/list/8545893/best-songs-of-2019-top-100|title=The 100 Best Songs of 2019: Staff List |date=December 11, 2019|magazine=Billboard|access-date=December 29, 2019}} At the 2019 ARIA Music Awards, the song earned them a nomination for the ARIA Award for Best Group.{{Cite web|title=2019 ARIA Award Winners Announced|url=https://www.aria.com.au/awards/news/2019-aria-award-winners-announced|access-date=2020-11-01|website=www.aria.com.au|language=en}}
Besides the original version, the band has also released an alternate version and two remixes of the song; on 5 July 2019, a version called "Easier – Live from the Vault" was released on YouTube with an accompanying music video. It was later made available on streaming services and for digital download as well.{{Cite web|url=https://www.altpress.com/news/5-seconds-of-summer-easier-live-the-vault-5sos/|title=5 Seconds Of Summer enter the vault in moody "Easier" live performance|last=Campbell|first=Rachel|date=5 July 2019|website=Alternative Press|language=en-US|access-date= 16 March 2020}} A week later, on 12 July 2019, a remix by Seeb was released, and on 13 August 2019, a remix with Charlie Puth was released.
Promotion
5 Seconds of Summer posted clips on social media leading up to the announcement, posting teasers from the song's upcoming music video along with its name and release date.{{cite web|last=Jane|first=Karen|title=5 Seconds of Summer Might Be Dropping a New Song Called 'Easier'!|url=https://myx.abs-cbn.com/features/18765/5-seconds-of-summer-new-song-easier |website=ABS-CBN|access-date=19 May 2019|date=19 May 2019}}
Composition
Rolling Stone described the song as "dark" and noted the inspiration from "synth-heavy groups of the Eighties and Nineties like Depeche Mode and Tears for Fears and, more specifically, Nine Inch Nails' "Closer".{{Cite magazine|url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/5-seconds-of-summer-easier-interview-new-song-837008/|title=Watch 5 Seconds of Summer's Gloomy Video for Nine Inch Nails-Inspired 'Easier'|last=Spanos|first=Brittany|date=23 May 2019|magazine=Rolling Stone|language=en-US|access-date=13 March 2020}} Billboard noted that "the relatably heart-rending sentiment is elevated by lead singer Luke Hemmings' impassioned vocals, from the murmuring verses to the falsetto on the chorus".{{Cite magazine|url=http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/pop/8512884/5-seconds-of-summer-easier-video|title=5 Seconds Of Summer's 'Easier' Video: Watch|date=23 May 2019|magazine=Billboard|access-date=13 March 2020}}
Music video
The music video, directed by Grant Singer, was released the same day as the single. In the video, "Hemmings, wearing a leather ensemble and glitter eyeshadow, sings chained by the wrists to the roof of a blue-lit cave while guitarist Michael Clifford, bassist Calum Hood and drummer Ashton Irwin rock out in front of the candle-studded backdrop [...] In addition to the cave setting, the video also features a striking seductress and haunting scenes of the bandmates submerged in on orange-lit pool and individually strolling down a long hallway in which their headshots are set ablaze."{{Cite magazine|url=https://ew.com/music/2019/05/23/music-video-5-seconds-of-summer-easier/|title=Check out the edgy music video for new 5 Seconds of Summer single, 'Easier'|magazine=EW|language=EN|access-date=13 March 2020}}
The blue lighting prominent throughout the video follows the aesthetic of the single's artwork. Four symbols, representing each member, were used in the teasers for the song and also appear in the video as tattoos along the female dancer's spine as well as on a burning poster at the end.{{Cite web|url=https://thewhisp.mommyish.com/entertainment/entertainment-news/symbols-5-seconds-of-summer-video-easier-era-meaning/|title=5 Seconds Of Summer's New Music Video Just Dropped & Everyone's Wondering The Same Thing|date=23 May 2019|website=the whisp|language=en-US|access-date=13 March 2020|archive-date=16 September 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210916172829/https://thewhisp.mommyish.com/entertainment/entertainment-news/symbols-5-seconds-of-summer-video-easier-era-meaning/|url-status=dead}}
