Eburneana magna is a species of jumping spider in the genus Eburneana that mimics ants. It is a large spider, as is emphasised by the species name, the Latin for big, with a body that can be up to {{convert|12|mm|in}} in length, although only the female has been identified and in other species in the genus the male is larger than the female. The species has been identified from a holotype found in Ivory Coast.
Taxonomy and etymology
Eburneana magna is a species of jumping spider that was first named by Wanda Wesołowska and Tamás Szűts in 2001.{{cite web|author=World Spider Catalog|year=2017|title=Eburneana magna Wesolowska & Szűts, 2001|website=World Spider Catalog|publisher=Natural History Museum|place=Bern|url=http://www.wsc.nmbe.ch/species/29114|version=18.0|accessdate=19 July 2017}} It is one of over 500 species identified by Wesołowska.{{sfn|Wiśniewski|2020|page=6}} It is the type species of the genus Eburneana, one of many of spiders that mimics ants. The genus is named for Litus Eburneum, the Latin name for Ivory Coast, where the species was first identified.{{sfn|Wesołowska|Szűts|2001|pages=523, 525}} The species name is the Latin word for big, in reference to the relatively large size of the spider.{{sfn|Wesołowska|Szűts|2001|page=528}} In 2015, the genus was added to the subclade Saltafresia in the clade Salticoida based on the analysis of 8 genes.{{sfn|Maddison|Li|Bodner|Zhang|2014|pages=66, 69}} In 2017, it was added to the supergroup Hylloida by Jerzy Prószyński.{{sfn|Prószyński|2017|page=31}}
Description
Eburneana magna is a large spider, with a very flat body measuring up to {{convert|12|mm|in}} in length.{{sfn|Wesołowska|Szűts|2001|page=523}} Only the female has been described.{{sfn|Szűts|2003|page=420}} The holotype has a dark brown, almost black, carapace that looks extended and is {{convert|5.4|mm|in}} long and {{convert|2.5|mm|in}} wide. It is covered with short grey hairs. The abdomen is also elongated and measures {{convert|5.1|mm|in}} long and {{convert|3.3|mm|in}} wide. While all examples are relatively large, the male of the genus is generally even larger than the female. For example, the male of the related species Eburneana scharffi has a carapace that is between {{convert|0.7|and|0.9|mm|in}} longer than the female.{{sfn|Wesołowska|Szűts|2001|pages=525, 528}}
The spider is distinguished from other members of genus by a large number of spigots on its spinneret and the structure of epigyne.{{sfn|Wesołowska|Szűts|2001|page=525}} It shares some similarities with other ant-mimicking jumping spiders, particularly the males that have front legs that are similar to members of the family Pelleninae.{{sfn|Wesołowska|Szűts|2001|page=523}}
