Edward Joseph Furgol (March 24, 1917 – March 6, 1997) was an American professional golfer. He is best known for winning the 1954 U.S. Open.{{cite news |url=https://www.nytimes.com/1997/03/12/sports/ed-furgol-79-pro-golfer-overcame-injury.html |newspaper=New York Times |agency=(obituary) |title=Ed Furgol, 79; pro golfer overcame injury |date=March 12, 1997 |access-date=July 21, 2016}}

Early life

Furgol was Polish-American born in New York Mills, New York.

At age twelve, Furgol injured his left elbow when he fell off a set of parallel bars at a playground. Despite several surgeries, the elbow never healed correctly and was left with a crooked arm {{convert|10|in|cm|spell=in}} shorter as a result. On the recommendation of his doctors, he took up golf.{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=YAUdAAAAIBAJ&sjid=vooEAAAAIBAJ&pg=3508%2C4618112 |title=Silent Ed is new Open golf champ |newspaper=Sarasota Journal |location=Florida |agency=Associated Press |first=Orlo |last=Robertson |page=7 |date=June 21, 1954}}{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=bxMiAAAAIBAJ&sjid=pHQFAAAAIBAJ&pg=2016%2C559304 |newspaper=The Day |location=New London, Connecticut |last=DeGange |first=John |title=Ins and Outs |date=July 3, 1954 |page=12 }}

Furgol won six times on the PGA Tour, including one major championship, the 1954 U.S. Open. Furgol won the 1954 Canada Cup as both an individual and teammate. He also played on the Ryder Cup team in 1957.

Although he was from the same town as fellow tour player Marty Furgol (1916–2005), they were not related.{{cite book |last=Barkow |first=Al |author-link=Al Barkow |title=The History of the PGA TOUR |publisher=Doubleday |date=November 1989 |isbn=0-385-26145-4 |others=Copyright PGA Tour |page=68}}
