He was educated at Leeds University{{Who's Who | title=Pugh, William Edward Augustus | id = U168301 | type = was | volume = 1920–2016 | edition = April 2014 online | access-date = 31 March 2016 }} and the College of the Resurrection, Mirfield.Crockford's Clerical Directory 1975-76 London: Oxford University Press, 1976 {{ISBN|0-19-200008-X}} Ordained in 1934 he began his career with a curacy at Staveley, Derbyshire.
