Playing career
Van der Bergh was born in Pretoria and schooled in Port Elizabeth. Van der Bergh made his test debut for the Springboks in 1994 against the {{nrut|Argentina}} at Ellis Park in Johannesburg as a replacement for Tiaan Strauss.{{Cite book|title=South African rugby test players 1949-1995|last=Jooste|first=Graham K.|date=1995|publisher=Penguin|isbn=0140250174|location=Johannesburg|pages=143|oclc=36916860}} In 1994 he toured with the Springboks to Britain and Ireland.
