History

The electoral district of Mitchell was created by the Additional Members Act of 1864 which introduced six new single-member electorates. A by-election was held to fill the seat. The nomination date was 18 March 1865 and the election was held on 25 March 1865.{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article75512716 |title=NON-INFECTIOUSNESS OF PLEURO-PNEUMONIA. |newspaper=The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser (Toowoomba, Qld. : 1858 - 1880) |location=Toowoomba, Qld. |date=1 February 1865 |access-date=11 March 2014 |page=4 |publisher=National Library of Australia}}

In 1885, part of Mitchell was removed to form the new Electoral district of Barcoo.
