Gowing was educated at Fort Street High School[http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article14504566 Trove] and the University of Sydney; and ordained in 1907.Crockford's Clerical Directory 1929–30: Oxford, OUP, 1929 p 508 He began his career as a Curate at The Oaks, New South Wales, after which he served at Armidale Cathedral.
